The six-part film series ‚Beyond the War‘ is curated by Amer Katbeh and will feature documentary movies from and on Syria followed by discussions with guests. Here, different issues related to Syrian society and politics before and after 2011 (start of uprising) will be highlighted, like foundation of Syrian society, political system and participation, religion and secularism, the Kurdish issue and women rights.

Step by Step (1978, Syria), Arabic with English subtitles
Director: Ossama Mohammed
Screening followed by an open discussion with Lama Ahmad, former Syrian diplomat, about the foundation of Syrian society and the impact of Baath-regime on it.

The filmmaker captured the dire state of Syria in his short documentary. The film is a reflection on the foundation of the Syrian society in 1976. The film starts off hopefully enough, with different village children talking about their dream jobs. But it soon becomes clear that such innocent candour will be short-lived.

ضمن عرض 6 أفلام وثائقية من سوريا أو حولها – يتبعها نقاش مفتوح مع عدد من الضيوف، سيتم تلسيط الضوء على مواضيع مختلفة عن المجتمع والسياسة في سوريا قبل وبعد 2011 (بداية الانتفاضة). من ضمن هذه المواضيع: نشأة المجتمع السوري، النظام السياسي وفرص المشاركة، دور الدين ومسألة العلمانية، المسألة الكردية وحقوق النساء في سوريا.

يصور المخرج في فلمه القصير الأوضاع في سوريا في عام 1976 ويسلط الضوء على نشأة المجتمع السوري. بينما يبدأ الفلم مع بعض الأمل في عرض بعض الأطفال الذين يتكلمون عن أحلامهم المسقبلية، لاحقاً يتضح أن هذه الأحلام البريئة والصادقة لن تعاش لفترة طويلة.

عرض للفلم يتبعه نقاش مفتوح مع لمى أحمد، دبلوماسية سورية سابقة، حول نشأة المجتمع السوري وأثر نظام البعث عليه.
